SET4food project phase II  [2016-2018]

Sustainable Energy Technologies for Food Security in Humanitarian contexts

According to “UNHCR mid-year trends” (UNHCR, 2017), in the first half of 2016 the global number of displaced persons continued to rise and the pprospects for displaced people to return to their homes remained slim.

Sustainable energy technologies in refugee camps or informal settlements continue to be essential to give efficient access to basic services such as food preservation, cooking, health and water supply. Moreover, enhancing collaboration among humanitarian actors active in the field of energy access is essential in order to achieve objectives in a more efficient way.

A second phase of SET4food (Sustainable Energy Technologies for Food Security in Humanitarian Contexts) is now ongoing. Started in May 2016 with the aim of ensuring collaboration and synergies among humanitarian actors in the energy sector, this second phase is not only addressed to energy access for food utilization but it rather considers all the aspects related to food security. Training and awareness activities are foreseen for rising skills and knowledge about the importance of including access to energy within humanitarian actions and new tools (M&E procedures and Impact Evaluation Framework) are expected to be elaborated in order to give humanitarian actors proper instruments for implementing effective actions. Knowledge sharing and coordination are being fostered through the creation of a platform (ENERGYCoP) aimed at facilitating information sharing and discussion on energy access topics.

SET4food phase 2 is implemented by COOPI - Cooperazione Internazionale in partnership with Politecnico di Milano and three co-chairs of the Safe Access to Fuel and Energy Working Group (SAFE WG)Global Alliance for Clean Cookstoves, WFP and FAO. As well as the first phase, it is also co-funded by the European Commission's Humanitarian Aid and Civil Protection department (ECHO).
