Hiking the Appalachian Trail: Entering Connecticut and a Relaxed Day on the Trail (2026)

Welcome to the 102nd day of an extraordinary journey, where we delve into the experiences of a hiker traversing the Appalachian Trail. Today's narrative takes us from the bustling New York to the serene Connecticut, offering a glimpse into the physical and mental challenges that come with long-distance hiking.

A Well-Deserved Rest

After two consecutive days of intense hiking, covering over 25 miles each, our hiker decided to indulge in a much-needed sleep-in. Waking up at a leisurely 7 a.m., they embarked on their journey a little after 8:30 a.m., a relaxed start compared to their usual pace.

Crossing State Lines

The day began with an easy mile, followed by a gradual climb. After crossing a road, they reached the Connecticut border, marking their entry into the tenth state along the trail. A significant milestone, don't you think? It's a testament to the dedication and endurance of our hiker.

Adjusting to New Shoes

While the new shoes provided comfort, the break-in period caused some discomfort, a common challenge for hikers. However, our hiker remains optimistic, acknowledging the vast improvement over their previous worn-out shoes. It's a reminder that even the most comfortable gear requires an adjustment period.

Soaking in the River

About four miles into the hike, our hiker spotted Shooter, another hiker, soaking their feet in a river. A brilliant idea, indeed! They joined Shooter for a 15-minute break, allowing their feet to relax in the cold river water. It was a refreshing and much-needed respite, especially after the initial sluggish start.

Exploring Kent, CT

After the river break, our hikers embarked on a relatively steep climb of 700 feet in less than a mile. Despite feeling sluggish, they persevered, taking their time and enjoying the view at the top. The surrounding countryside offered a picturesque sight, a reward for their efforts. A short blue blaze led them to a covered bridge, a delightful diversion from the trail.

The Final Stretch

The last few miles into Kent were challenging, with steep ups and downs. Our hiker took their time, navigating the terrain carefully. Even a snake sighting couldn't dampen their spirits! Once in Kent, they refreshed with cold drinks and headed to an outfitter, only to find it closed. But, as they say, when one door closes, another opens - they moved on to their next stop, Cozzy's on Main, a burger and pizza joint.

A Satisfying Dinner

Cozzy's did not disappoint! Our hikers enjoyed a delicious 14-inch bacon, cheddar, and ranch pizza, along with garlic knots, a well-deserved treat after a long day's hike. They were able to charge their electronics and rest their weary feet, a much-needed recharge before heading back to the trail.

Hitting the Trail Again

With a full belly and recharged batteries, our hikers set off to reach the Stewart Hollow Brook Shelter before sunset. The hike, though challenging, was made more enjoyable by the Housatonic River, a beautiful backdrop to their evening trek. They arrived at the shelter just in time, setting up camp in the dark, a familiar routine by now.
